I started my research career as a Ph.D. student in 1973 so have been living the life of a scientist for 32 years. I have been working on the SV40 T antigen and p53 system for 29 of those years. As soon as I started to write this piece I was overwhelmed to realize the progress that has been made in biological sciences in that very short period of time. I have been around to see the development of monoclonal antibodies, recombinant DNA, DNA sequencing, splicing, cloning, transgenesis and the human genome project. I have also been a witness to the growth of the whole Biotech industry and the lifesaving products it has developed. Like so many other scientists in the biomedical field I have lived through times of immense flux, with great public concerns over the use of animals, over the safety of recombinant DNA and of vaccines. This time has also seen the emergence of AIDS and SARS and the elimination of smallpox. There is no doubt that we are living in amazing times and that we are all witnesses to an astonishing period in human history. All these things reflect the activity of a complex society and the individuals that make it up. I have decided for this article to give a short history of my life as a scientist focusing on the start of my career and then discuss some of my own reflections
