This study presents the manufacture ofhighly porous hydroxyapatite by a novel technique thatemploys the foaming of suspensions prior to the in situpolymerization of organic monomers contained in thecompositions. m's method produces strong gelledbodies with up to 90% porosity that can withstandmachining in the green state. Complex-shapedcomponents can be obtained if the process comprisescasting in one of the processing steps. The organicadditives are eliminated at temperatures above 300 degC, and sintering is carried out for consolidation ofthe ceramic matrix Spherical interconnected cellswith sizes ranging from 20 to 1000 #mu#m characterizethe porous structure, depending on the specimendensity. Cytotoxicity tests were conducted onextracts from sintered HA foams based on aquantitative method of cell colony formation and thedetermination of cell death after indirect contact ofthe porous material with mammalian cells. This invitro test of biological evaluation revealed that theoriginal purity of the biomedical-grade hy-droxyapatite powder was affected neither throughprocessing nor by the employed reagents.
