Reduction of Heavy Metal Cadmium Accumulation in Rice Grains

Pot experiments were conducted in the present study to investigate effects of different cadmium (Cd) concentrations in contaminated rice yields, correlation of Cd content in rice grains from soils contaminated with different concentrations of Cd, and influences of maifanite and foliar application of silica sols on alleviation of Cd toxicity in the contaminated rice soil. Results from the study showed that the relationship between the Cd accumulation in rice grains and content of Cd in soils had a positive linear correlation. The rice yields significantly decreased with increasing cadmium content in the contaminated soil, mainly reflecting the decrease of number of panicles per plant and spike lets per panicle. Both maifanite and foliar silicon fertilizer (silica sols) significantly reduced the Cd concentration in rice grains grown in the Cd contaminated soil. Moreover, the maifanite significantly increased the rice yields. Capacities of different treatment combinations on decreasing total accumulation of Cd in the rice grains were also compared in the paddy field experiments. The results showed that all the combinations effectively decreased the concentration of Cd in the grains, shoots and roots of rice grown in the severely Cd contaminated soil, averagely reducing it from 50% up to 63.59%.
