Drug-susceptible tuberculosis (TB) can be successfully treated with current first-line anti-TB therapy (isoniazid, rifampin, pyr-azinamide, and ethambutol), with cure rates exceeding 95% among patients who adhere to treatment. Drug-resistant TB, however, is often more difficult to cure, for several reasons: second-line anti-TB drugs are less effective and more toxic than first-line agents, and treatment courses are often longer, making adherence difficult. Thus, drug resistance can exacerbate the morbidity and mortality associated with TB, which currently causes almost 2 million deaths each year throughout the world.
