The recent winter in San Diego has brought rain to our city (yes, it can rain, even in southern California) and has been marked by an absence of calm seas, sun, or steady breeze. Such a dreary atmosphere prompts me to wonder whether our small society devoted to the procedural aspects of pulmonary and critical care medicine is really necessary at a time when other, larger societies are reaching out to their members, attracting advertising dollars for their journals, and soliciting financial support through individual and corporate donations. Several of you have shared similar concerns with me during our conversations.
