Conventional practice tends to favor allocation of surgical referrals according to a surgeon's particular area of expertise. Whether it be coronary or valvular surgery, thoracics or pediatrics, surgeons have long recognized the fact that outcomes are closely tied to surgical experience. Logical thinking would then dictate that a similar strategy be applied to arrhythmia surgery. Such a strategy has historically been the case with respect to the classic "cut and sew" Maze procedure, an operation usually reserved for those surgeons most experienced in its application. However, the recent introduction of the "modified Maze" procedure, along with its many associated technologies, has created a situation whereby the Maze procedure is accessible by most cardiac specialists.
