BECAUSE OF their minimally invasive nature, the use of transcatheter devices for the closure of atrial septal defects (ASDs) has become a very popular therapeutic option. Patients who have undergone transcatheter closures of ASDs have a shorter hospital length of stay and fewer procedure-related complications. As a result, the percutaneous closure of appropriately located and sized ASDs is becoming a standard primary option for definitive repair. Furthermore, recent studies have shown long-term safety in the use of the Amplatzer occluder device, even for ASDs >30 mm in diameter. Advancements in imaging technology, eg, 3-dimensional (3D) transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), to guide this procedure have contributed significantly to their safety and efficiency. The role of echocardiography has progressed from a mere anatomic description of ASDs to the real-time guidance of deployment and positioning of occluder devices. Echocar-diographic guidance for the positioning of intracardiac devices has been recognized as a category II indication. In particular, the volumetric nature of 3D datasets allows simultaneous visualization from multiple perspectives (x-plane function), which facilitates its role as an essential adjunct to ensure proper placement and success of repair.
