Benzamides were converted into benzonitriles with BrCCl_3-PPh_3-Et_3N in CH_2Cl_2 in an Appel-type reaction. Benzaldoximes could be transformed to benzonitriles under identical conditions. It was found that the reaction system BrCCl_3-(2 equiv.)PPh_3 was also suitable for these transformations with PPh_3 replacing Et_3N.
