Biophysical techniques for transdermal delivery of iron

摘要

Iron deficiency anemia is the one of the major nutritional deficiency disorder. Current conventional treatment options with oral and parenteral iron formulations are associated with limitations and numerous side effects. Transdermal delivery of iron was explored systematically as an alternative treatment option as it is non-invasive and patient compliant. Ferric pyrophosphate was used as the source of iron for transdermal delivery. Biophysical techniques like iontophoresis, electroporation and microporation were explored for the delivery of FPP and in vivo studies were carried out in anemic rat model. Therapeutically required quantities of iron can be delivered using combination of these active techniques.
