Interleukin (IL)-17-producing CD4+ helper T cells, TM7 cells, are involved in protection against bacterial pathogens and in the pathogenesis of various cutaneous inflammatory diseases, such as psoriasis and contact hypersensitivity [1]. In addition, a higher percentage of Thl7 cells has been detected in the lesional skin and in the peripheral blood in the acute exacerbation phase of atopic dermatitis (AD), compared to normal controls [2,3]. It has been thought that IL-17 produced by TM7 cells infiltrating into the dermis acts on keratinocytes to produce inflammatory mediators, such as IL-8 and granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) to chemoattract neutrophils and T cells and to activate Langerhans cells and endothelial cells, respectively [2,4], which initiates and enhances cutaneous inflammations.
