Sebocytes are extremely specialized epithelial cells that progressively accumulate lipids and release their content by cellular degradation and cell membrane rupture, a process known as holocrine secretion [1]. Their product, including cell debris, is released from the sebaceous gland (SG) into the follicular canal and reaches the skin surface in the form of sebum. While the full range of sebum functions in human skin remains to be clarified, sebum appears to be an important element of the epidermal barrier and the skin immune system [1]. Although the transcription factors and signalling pathways regulating SG development and homeo-stasis are becoming increasingly well-understood, little is known about the transcriptional regulation of sebaceous lipogenesis. Here, we employed the immortalized human SG cell line SZ95 [2] to identify transcripts induced by ciglitazone and linoleic acid (LA) during sebaceous lipogenesis.
