摘要

A sharp, well-demarcated mandibular line is a recognizable sign of beauty and youth. During the aging process a loss of demarcation occurs as a result of many factors, principally, a loss of tissue, loss of elasticity, involution of bony structures, and loss of the supporting pillars. A redistribution of fat can contribute to the development of jowls. A loss of fat in the cheeks coinciding with an increase of fat in the jowls and a regression of the mandibula results in a more pronounced indentation between the jowls and chin. In younger patients an accumulation of fat in the submental area and in the neck may hide the contours of the neck and mandible. Liposuction, provided by the technique as described in this article, is a major tool in the process of rejuvenation of the lower face and neck. Clearly, an in-depth anatomical examination of this area is essential, but is beyond the scope of this article.
