摘要

A significant number of patients use emergency departments for pain-related issues, most specifically chronic nonmalignant pain, when they could better benefit from other treatment interventions. Shumway et al, Wilsey et al, and Milbrett and Halm agree there are a multitude of issues surrounding the problem of chronic nonmalignant pain management in the emergency department. Overutilization of emergency departments by patients with chronic nonmalignant pain contributes to overcrowding, which in turn causes a drain on resources, an increase in costs, and an increase in wait time. Patients leave without being seen, and this may result in negative effects on patient, staff, and physician satisfaction and patient quality of care. The drain on resources and increased costs are significant concerns to health care systems.
