Working in a busy emergency department presents a number of challenges regarding educating the emergency nursing staff and keeping them updated on the latest practice and policies. Perhaps one of the most difficult hurdles to overcome is providing emergency nurses with educational opportunities that are specifically targeted to their everyday practice. Another challenge of ED nursing education is staff participation in information sharing and/or teaching. Finally, one of the greatest educational challenges in a busy emergency department is providing education regularly at a time tliat is convenient to staff. In short, providing education for a busy ED staff can be a daunting task requiring hours of preparation and hours of paid educational dollars to achieve. At Maine Medical Center, we believe we have devised an easily implemented solution to these problems. It is called the "ED Mini" (the title is a play on words for both "emergency department" and "education"). In a nutshell, the ED Mini is a 5- to 7-minute presentation offered to ED staff on shift in the clinical setting.
