摘要

In his newest book, Dr. Breggin provides his insights on the nature of Guilt, Shame, and Anxiety across 32 chapters in three sections; Understanding Negative Legacy Emotions, Achieving Emotional Freedom, and Freedom to Love. He proposes a unified theory of Negative Legacy Emotions (i.e. Guilt, Shame, Anxiety) from a vantage point akin to that of evolutionary psychology filled with personal observations, case examples from his practice and evidence to support his hypothesis. The first section of this self-help book makes the case that humans evolved to be the most violent yet the most loving/empathic creatures on earth during prehistoric times when humans needed to act both violently aggressive as well as cooperatively prosocial to hunt and survive. According to the Theory of Negative Legacy Emotions, guilt, shame and anxiety was needed for human survival to inhibit violent aggression in order to keep humans from killing each other within their family units. The book contends that since these primitive aggression inhibitor emotions are no longer needed for human survival, they can inhibit personal responsibility and personal growth.
