Healthcare professionals are increasingly required to improve quality of patient care through identification and promotion of practices that are effective and base their clinical decisions on best evidence. Major investments and progress in biomedical research have created a new approach to clinical decision-making and patient care. As opposed to the conventional practice of medicine, which is mainly based on traditional medical virtues, such as the experience, expertise, acumen, and intuition of the practicing physician, a new model of medical practice, "evidence-based medicine," has been developed. Evidence-based medicine is a relatively new movement in clinical practice that aims to put medicine on a firmer scientific basis.1 Historically, selecting a treatment has relied on understanding the pathophysiological process of a disorder and applying therapies that interrupt or modify this process. Basic research and its fundamental principles and findings have been complemented by applied clinical research, forming a new paradigm of medical practice based on best available evidence.
