In patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention, drug-eluting stents are currently the treatment of choice as they reduce neointima formation and, subsequently, coronary restenosis. All currently commercially available stents for coronary use are permanent implants. However, the need for mechanical support of the healing artery is temporary, not permanent.
