In summary, anatomic variations in the number of vertebrae, alterations in the shape of the vertebrae at the junction of the mid and lower back, and variations in the number of stabilizing joints of the lower back were common findings in the 36 Thoroughbred racehorses examined. Visible arthritic changes were found in all spinal columns at a variety of locations. These results indicate that spinal abnormalities are fairly common in racing Thoroughbreds and may need to be investigated further as a potential source of poor performance. Vertebral andpel-vic stress fractures may be a significant cause of future catastrophic breakdowns in Thoroughbred racehorses. With this information, better diagnostic techniques for back and pelvic problems are being developed using ultrasound and scintigraphy (bone scans). The pelvic stress fractures that were noted occurred in a section of the pelvis that was previously not visualized. Changing the techniques for viewing this area of the back and pelvis has improvedour ability to detect back and pelvic problems in all horses.
