There is a continuing need for the development of scientifically sound, efficient, ethical, and safe methods for the assessment of therapeutic interventions. The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine has established a conference series, funded by The National Cancer Institute through a 5-year Conference Grant and co-sponsored by the American Statistical Association and the Society for Clinical Trials, aimed at facilitating advances in approaches to the statistical design, implementation, and analysis of clinical trials. The topic for the 2009 meeting was statistical issues in the development of therapies designed for people with conditions defined by genetic or other individual characteristics. The move toward 'targeted therapies,' most evident today in cancer therapeutics, raises the possibility of increasing treatment success rates and reducing exposure of individuals to treatments that are unlikely to provide them any benefit, which is part of the long-term ideal of personalized medicine.
