摘要

The "herald wave" of swine influenza (H1N1) pandemic began in Mexico and quickly spread to the United States and the world. New York was the epicenter in the early phases of the swine influenza (H1N1) pandemic in the United States. Winthrop-Uni-versity Hospital is a 600-bed tertiary care facility that was in the epicenter of the swine influenza pandemic in the spring of 2009. The emergency department was inundated with patients who had influenza-like illnesses ((ILIs) for swine influenza (H1N1) testing/evaluation. All admitted patients with ILIs were screened using the influenza A (QuickVue A/B) test. Rapid influenza A test positivity was predictive of H1N1 RT-PCR posi-tivity, but the rapid influenza A screening test was associated with 30% false negatives.
