摘要

Over the last three decades, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has spread and taken root over large areas of the globe, causing its greatest burden in mortality and morbidity in areas with the least health care infrastructure and number of providers. For many health care providers, HIV represents the greatest challenge of our time. With nurses/midwives as the universal access point for care by most women and families, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, they are also the gatekeepers to opening the door for health, being strategically placed to provide key leadership in turning around the HIV pandemic, reorganizing the health care team to best meet the challenges of HIV, developing new scopes of practice and policy for increased capacity of nurses/midwives, and ultimately being effective primary care providers for communicable and noncommunicable diseases.
