摘要

This request to comment on the 100th issue of the Journal of Health Communication could not come at a better time for me. I recently retired after a 30+-year career focused on health communication teaching, research, and practice. What a long way this field has come. I thought it might be interesting to read a personal account of a career that coincided with the development of the field.When I began my academic career at the University of Maryland in 1974 I had never had a course in health communication because, to the best of my knowledge, none existed at that time. It was one of my first Master's students who can take credit for initiating me into health communication.
