Determination of Diffusion Coefficient of Lactose Solution

摘要

Holography is an interference method of recording the light waves diffracted by a subject illuminated with coherent light. Holographic interferometry (H. I.) is one of the most important applications of holography. It is concerned with the formation and interpretation of fringe patterns, which appear when a wave generated at some earlier time and stored in a hologram is later reconstructed by interfering with a comparison wave. We report a technique, which uses double exposure holographic interferometry together with a simple mathematical interpretation, which allows immediate deduction of the diffusion coefficient. We have tested the method using diffusion of a 0.4 N lactose solution into pure distilled water. The interferograms are also obtained by lowering the concentration of lactose solution from 0.4 N up to 0.3 N. We have obtained distinct and well resolved interference fringes that are used for determining diffusion coefficients. It is observed that as the concentration of solution decreases the values of diffusion coefficients increases by very small amount. It is noticed that theses experimentally determined values of diffusion coefficient are in very good agreement with the standard values.
