The seismosensory system of Miocene-Pliocene, Pleistocene, and recent freshwater Cottoidei is characterized by three main types of structure: (1) narrow sensory canals; (2) wide sensory canals having the shape of consecutively connected cavities; (3) canals are lacking; there are only free neuromasts. Most fossil and recent (about 70%) fish species have the first type of system structure. Fluviatile forms of Cottoidei are characterized by a seismosensory system of the first structural type; lacustrine species have two or three types of system structure. The evolutionary transformations of the seismosensory system followed two pathways: (1)an increase in the sizes of canals and fontanels; (2) canal reduction and the replacement of canal neuromasts by free neuromasts.
