Notwithstanding the comparative diversity of Cyprinid fishes in the present-day ichthyofauna of Armenia, their fossil finds in the territory of the Republic of Armenia are not numerous. Bogachev (1938b) described the fossil Alburnus gambariani and Rutilus oswaldi from the freshwater deposits of the upper Plyocene of the Kotaik region of Armenia. Rukhkyan (1989) indicates finding residues of Capoeta sp. and Barbus sp. in the upper Plyocene diatomaceous deposits of the Ararat plain. We (Pipoyan and Gabrielyan, 1998; 2001) found Pseudoleuciscus macrocephalus from the early Oligocene of Dilizhan (northern Armenia) and Barbus sp. from the upper Plyocene-lower Pleistocene diatomaceous deposits in the upper reaches of the Vorotan River (southeastern Armenia). Other residues of fossil fishes in Armenia known at the present time are referred to as Clupeiformes, i.e., Clupea ventricosa, Clupea sp. (Bogachev, 1938; 1938a), Clupe-onella delicatula (Bogachev, 1938b); Salmoniformes, i.e., Salmo derzhavini (Vladimirov, 1946), Salrno sp. (Gabrielyan and Pipoyan, 1998); Siluriformes, i.e., Silurus glanis (Bogachev, 1938), Atheriniformes, i.e., Atherina sarmalica (schelkovnikovi) (Bogachev, 1938; 1938a), Cyprinidontiformes, i.e., Proiebias (Ismene) mutilus (Bogachev, 1938; 1938a).
