John had a distinguished career in medical microbiology and control of hospital infection. On leaving King Edward's School, Stourbridge, he joined the Medical Research Council Burns and Industrial Injuries Unit at the Birmingham Accident Hospital in 1960 as a Junior Technical Officer. He soon acquired the necessary technical and research skills for investigating the problems of infection in patients with severe burns and obtained a Fellowship of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences. The studies in which he was involved with Professor Lowbury included the use of antibiotics and silver compounds and plastic isolators in preventing the spread of infection. John transferred to the Hospital Infection Research Laboratory at Dudley Road Hospital (now the City Hospital) in 1973, initially as a Senior Research Officer and later as Laboratory Manager. The laboratory was becoming increasingly well known nationally as a research centre and was appointed as one of the few World Health Organization Collaborating Centres for Hospital Infection in the world. He was especially enthusiastic about social events for the laboratory staff, which helped to maintain friendly staff relations and the high morale for which the laboratory was well known.
