Undertaking good quality research studies in applied nutrition and dietetics and disseminating the results through publication and presentation is fundamental for the evidence base that supports dietetic practice. The Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics is one of 53 academic nutrition journals which publishes work relevant to dietitians and one of the few journals specifically oriented to dietetic practice and published in Europe. All nutrition-related researchers should be aware of the Journal and prospective authors are encouraged to discuss possible manuscripts with the editor. It is common to receive emails, calls and letters about research at all stages of manuscript preparation in order to clarify the form of submission (full report, short paper, letter or case study) and indeed considerable time can be saved by getting guidance on what to include and exclude in manuscripts before sending to the editorial office. Common queries include time taken from submission to publication, dealing with journal deadlines for re-submission and how to deal with referees queries. Sometimes readers also communicate in order to express negative views such as the small range of topics addressed (too much and too little on paediatrics, too much and too little on community nutrition) and sometimes too much or too little overall content.
