摘要

Cancer is a diverse group of assorted disorders and is a major public health problem. A total of 1,372,910 new cancer cases and 570,260 cancer-related deaths are expected in the United States in 2005 (Jemal et al., 2005). Cancer can be caused by carcinogen exposure, inherited genetic factors, or a variety of yet unexplained processes. Traditionally, treatment for cancer by removing or killing the tumor cells has included surgery, radiation (external and internal), and chemotherapy. Radiation and chemotherapy treatments target rapidly dividing cells and subsequently affect both healthy cells and cancer cells, therefore causing systemic toxicities that can limit the dosing of these agents.
