The relationship between flood peak andcatchment area is examined and exceed-ance probabilities of an envelope line forthese variables is derived for Westland,New Zealand. In particular, dimensional and RationalMethod analysis, together with statisticalevidence, is used to show that flood peakmagnitude is proportional to catchmentarea raised to the power of 0.75. Theanalyses also support the mathematicalform of the empirical TM61 formula andits recommended use in New Zealand forchecking estimates of flood peak magnitudein small, ungauged catchments. Using flood records from Westland, anenvelope line is derived from a logarithmic plotof maximum recorded flood peak magnitudeagainst catchment area for Westland. Theexpected exceedance probability of theenvelope and the exceedance probability ofthe expected envelope are estimated. Valuesobtained are consistent with assessmentsprovided by station year and index floodmethods. Consequently, where envelope lines canbe derived, they provide a useful preliminaryestimate or a quick check on other estimatesof flood peak magnitude and its exceedanceprobability obtained, for instance, fromrainfall-runoff models or flood frequencyanalysis.
