摘要

William (Bill) Harvey is a professor we know for ‘thinking otherwise’. At age 84 he has the gift of a mind that is still eagerly learning, prospecting new research horizons, and ‘thinking out of the box’ (see Dow’s tribute in this issue). Since gifts are not forever, Helmut Wieczorek, Julian Dow and I decided to pay tribute to Bill’s contributions to transport biology in insects by organizing an international symposium in his honor. The Society for Experimental Biology rushed to accept our proposal, the US National Science Foundation pitched in with travel funds, and the Journal of Insect Physiology offered a ‘special edition’. To hear from all of those who had come to Glasgow for unusually sunny days both in and out of the Convention Hall (Fig. 1), the Society for Experimental Biology allowed as many as four formal scientific sessions and one poster session. Still, we needed an additional satellite session which Julian Dow and Shireen Davies kindly hosted in their institute at the University of Glasgow.
