MONITRING OF INDIAN WHITEFLY POPULATIONS WITH MOLECULAR MARKERS FOR B-BIOTYPE

Survey was made to detect the presence of B-biotype of whitefly, Bemisia tabaci Genn, in different regions of India. Out of eight RAPD primers, the banding profile with primer OPH-16 was found to be useful in identifying B-biotype whitefly. The whitefly populations from Kolar were predominantly (89%) constituted by a close relative of B-biotype (Indian B-biotype-1), besides its two other genetically variants (Indian B-btotype-2 and Indian B-biotype-3) existing at low level (5.3% each). Indian B-biotype-1 and Indian B-biotype-2 shared high genetic similarity both between them (87 %) and with reference B-biotype (Australia), compared to 70 % in case of Indian B-biotype-3. In centrailndian region, B-biotype was absent in Maharashtra, but was found to contaminate about one third of whitefiy populations collected from Gujarat State though at different levels. In contrast, whitefly populations prevalent in North Indian States were homogenous consisting of single type of non B-biotype whitefly individualswhich differed genetically from the major non B-beotype whitefly prevalent in Central India.
