This special issue entitled "Protein quality control, the ubiquitin pro-teasome system, and autophagy" represents the contributions of more than a dozen leading clinical and translational experts discussing the converging fields of protein quality control, the ubiquitin proteasome system, and autophagy. These up-to-date and comprehensive summaries are presented for cardiovascular scientists and clinicians alike with limited exposure to this new and exciting field.While the homeostasis of the intracellular protein milieu is conceptually appreciated, its practical utility in the heart has only emerged in the past five years. In the first article by Sandri and Robbins [1], the "life cycle" of proteins is discussed, from protein synthesis, post-translational processing and transport, folding, assembly, stress, and clearance - the sum of which make up the concept of protein quality control.
