Cation-pi interactions within aromatic amino acid ionic liquids: A new tool for designing functional ionic liquids

We have newly designed and prepared various ionic liquids combining imidazolium, ammonium, and phosphonium cations with aromatic amino acid anions. They show unique physicochemical properties which are distinctly different from those of analogous ionic liquids having aliphatic amino acid anions. Through NMR measurements for the imidazolium-based ionic liquids in bulk, it has been found that the proton signals corresponding to the hydrogen atoms on the imidazolium ring shift to a high magnetic field upon the substitution of alanine anion for phenylalanine anion, which is indicative of the formation of cation-pi interactions between the imidazolium cation and the aromatic rings on the anion. These results suggest that the use of cation-pi interactions is a new tool for designing functions and properties of ionic liquids. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
