Ag migration in Ag-As-S glasses induced by electron-beam irradiation

Effects of electron-beam irradiation upon Ag-As-S glasses have been studied experimentally and theoretically. An electron beam accelerated at 10 kV induces Ag migration toward the irradiated part from surrounding regions, which can extend to similar to 50 mu m. As a result, the Ag-As-S glass with the Ag content, x, of 2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 35 at.% decomposes to Ag-depleted and Ag-accumulated phases, in which x similar or equal to 0 and 90 at.%, respectively. The AE-content increase in the irradiated region occurs efficiently in the glasses with 15 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 30 at.%. A mechanism for the Ag migration can be accounted far by Ag+ ionic motion under an electric field which is generated by the electrons and/or by diffusion of excited holes. The observations are compared with the characteristics of other ion-migration phenomena observed in chalcogenide and oxide glasses.
