Modern high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques were applied to study the local environments of several aluminum fluoride-based glasses and the model crystalline compound AlF3. Through the combined application of magic-angle spinning (MAS), Al-27 triple-quantum magic-angle spinning, as well as crosspolarization magic-angle spinning and rotational echo double resonance methods, a physical model concerning the short-range order has been developed for the glasses.
