Local structural study of Pb-induced instability in ZBLAN glass

摘要

Near-edge and extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements have been made in both glassy and crystallized phases of varying Pb-doped heavy-metal fluoride materials (Zr/Ba/La/Al/Na, or ZBLAN) to study the effect of Pb doping concentrations on the local geometric and electronic structures of the constituent atoms. A strong correlation is found between the observed instability of the glassy phase for Pb concentrations > 10% and the structural changes that are measured around the Ba ions. Implications of these novel findings are examined in light of the present understanding of these complex glass systems.
