Spoil dump stability in dragline mines - a case study of Jayant project

Jayant project is one of the largest mine of India in terms of total annual excavation. During 2003-04 total coal output was 9.66 million tonnes and overburden removal was 27.30 million c. um. The project is located in Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) where all mines are heavily mechanized large opencast mines. Mining activity is increasing in this coalfield every year and along with this, problem of dump management has come into focus. Problem of dump management has assumed importance in view of the fact that most of the coal production will continue to come from opencast mines in the coming years. There have been a many major and minor failures of dumps in Jay ant and at some other mines of NCL. Study regarding dump management gathered momentum after two major dump failures in 1994 at Jayant. Indian School of Mines (ISM) was entrusted the job of carrying out detailed scientific study for dump management. The report prepared by Prof. B K Mozumdar and Dr. P. Sen of ISM was submitted in 1997. However need was felt for further detailed study to suggest safe practices and necessary working parameters for safe dump management. A report prepared by GIPROSHAKHT and VNIMI of Russia in the year 1999 has been briefly discussed in this paper. In the meantime the project has taken various measures to maintain stability of OB dumps and these have been by and large very successful. Some of these have also been briefly discussed in this paper. As the mine is moving in dip direction, load on shovel dumpers has increased. It became essential to increase bench height for dragline workings. Also in future, as per detailed project report (DPR) of this mine, contribution from Turra seam, which is being exposed by dragline, will decrease and that from Purewa seams will increase. CMPDI has suggested in its operational plans to increase bench height from present 35-42m to up to 50m (35m + 15m) in vertical tandem. It will increase dump height.
