Progress in drilling fluids to its present state-of- art technology

Drilling fluid plays a very vital role in any drilling programme. Traditional saying is that drilling fluid is the blood of drilling a well. To cany out its functions for drilling shallow wells to hi-tech, extended reach horizontal wells few thousand metres below the surface, drilling fluids have evolved from a simple medium to high performance systems. Water, oil and also gas have been used as base for single component or multi-component fluid systems. In the following paragraphs functions, chemistry as well as the development of the systems from state of early days to its present state-of-art technology have been described. Drilling fluid is an integral element in any drilling programme - whether it is for core drilling for mineral exploration or for exploration and exploitation of mineral hydrocarbons trapped in the reservoir rocks few thousand metres below the surface. The basic objectives of all drilling fluids are (i) to carry the drill cuttings from bottom to surface, (ii) to prevent inflow of fluids from permeable rocks into well bore and (iii) to maintain borehole stability till it is cased. Other functions of drilling fluids are to cool and clean the bit, to reduce friction and to form a thin but compact filter cake to prevent drill fluid filtrate invasion into porous rock. Besides these, drilling fluids assist in sample collection, logging, etc. for geological and other petrophysical studies. In view of the above crucial functions drilling fluids are often compared to blood in the human body.
