In the management of chronic pain, the oral (least invasive) route is preferred for administration of analgesics. Nonscheduled opioids, such as tramadol, are among the pharmacological agents recommended for the management of chronic pain, along with NSAIDs and paracetamol. An initial low dose of analgesic is followed by titration to a dose that alleviates pain without causing dose-limiting adverse effects; several weeks of pharmacotherapy may be required before such therapeutic benefit appears.
