Among the oilseed crops, mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern & Coss] is an important rabi oilseed crop which is widely grown in the northern belt of the country. About 1.2 million hectares land is salt affected in Uttar Pradesh. Indian mustard has some tolerance to high concentration of salts in these soils though the germination of the seed is adversely affected. The inability of a given variety to germinate and establish the seedling under such situation is a major limiting factor in the crop production. The salt tolerance in mustard varies from variety to variety (Kumar and Malik, 1983; Chopra and Chopra, 1992). An investigation was therefore, undertaken on various mustard genotypes to find out the effect of salinity on germination and seedlinggrowth stages and to identify genotypes which have better tolerance for the said situation.
