The molluscan extrapallial fluid (EPF) is enclosed between the inner surface of the shell and the mantle. It is used in studies related to a wide range of disciplines, such as biochemistry, geochemistry, environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology. Studying EPF requires its careful extraction from the animal in order to avoid contamination from other fluids, tissues or shell fragments. Extraction of EPF from opened valves using a syringe needle or directly through a hole drilled in the shell valve are common practices. However, chances for EPF contamination are high for these and other known methods. For example, Figure 1 E shows microparticles of shell material found in EPF which was extracted immediately after a hole was drilled through a shell.
