摘要

Some lucky people love writing, while others struggle. A writing skills trainer who used to find writing difficult and procrastinate has good advice for those who struggle to write medical reports, scientific papers or even their thesis.1 He says lack of planning was the main reason for the lack of clarity of his writing. A wise professor showed me the rambling nature of the Discussion section of a paper I was struggling with, by getting me to write one or two word titles for each paragraph. This instantly revealed the repetitiveness and lack of direction of my writing. I have adapted this advice since by writing myself short headings for each paragraph before starting to write a paper or an editorial. Mark Twain famously said that he did not have time to write a short letter so he would write a long one instead. To write well is to write concisely. That is not to say that I approve of the modern tendency to reduce information to short sound bites. I am a strong advocate of letter writing, preferably handwritten, and shudder to think that we might have had Mozart's tweets or Mozart's emails instead of Mozart's letters.
