I have been travelling the globe in the last few months, Montreal, Dublin and Perth, to speak at national conferences. I consider myself extremely fortunate and privileged to have these opportunities to discuss orthopaedic health care and meet with nurses and other professions. The conference papers are thought provoking and stimulating and conversation during breaks and social events often lead to a critical and questioning approach to current nursing care issues. However, criticism (positive or negative) of our day to day nursing care is often less well appreciated. As nurses we tend to become awkward in accepting praise for excellence in care and when adverse comments are made about the care of patients we tend to take them to heart and clam up or dismiss them.
