Until recently, smaller fields of less than 100 million bbl of oil, such as in the North Sea, and deepwater fields, such as in the Gulf of Mexico, were considered to the uneconomical. But a new expandable tubular technology allows operators to drill deeper wells with smaller equipment, extend the length of deviated wells, and reach deepwater objectives previously though impractical or impossible to reach with traditional casing technology.
