摘要

As we are all too well aware, melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of cancer of the skin. Once it has metastasized, treatment options have been limited and prognosis grim. At long last, promising new therapies have been approved and are on the horizon, giving patients with melanoma and their physicians reasons to have hope. These new drugs for some have extended life and for others have appeared to cure the patient of metastatic melanoma. Although a recent update on melanoma was published in Climes in Dermatology in 2009, since then ground-breaking advances have been made in understanding the immunology of melanoma. Researchers are now able to ask how best to target specific genetic mutations that accelerate tumor growth and how best to turn on the patient's own immune system so that it can identify and eliminate melanoma cells. In this issue of Clinics in Dermatology, we report some of these exciting breakthroughs and recent advances in the treatment of melanoma.
