I was bom a "normal" or "unremarkable" white girl in Brooklyn, NY, in 1942, inheriting fair skin, dark brown hair, and brown eyes from my Russian, Irish, Scotch, and Dutch ancestors. When I was 11 years old and living on Long Island in the suburbs of New York City, my mother mentioned to an otolaryngologist that I always had a cold. He told her that it could not be so and that my problem had to be allergies. To treat them, he prescribed nose drops that contained silver with instructions to take them "intermittently as needed."
