Simulation was carried out for the dielectric images of single biological cells obtained using the scanning dielectric microscope (SDM) that was developed previously (Asami K 1994 Meas. Sci. Technol. 5 589-92). The dielectric images were calculated by a numerical technique based on the three-dimensional finite difference method. The simulation method enabled us to assess the spatial resolution and the optimum probe size of SDM and also to analyse the dielectric images. The possibility of detecting the topography of the cell surface and the intracellular organelles was discussed.
