As the final death toll of a coal mine explosion in northern China reached 51, there are signs that the authorities are at last trying to address the horrendous loss of life in China's mines.The November 26 blast at the Hulun Bei'er No. 2 mine, near the border with Mongolia, came just days before the central Government launched renewed efforts to reduce the number of mining accidents.Every year thousands of Chinese miners die in accidents inside mines, as well as from lung diseases brought on by poor mine ventilation. A series of underground gas explosions- have recently hit mines in Sichuan, Guangdong, Guizhou and Henan provinces, among others.
