Behaviour of beef cows of SalersI breed and F_1 crossbreds of Salers x Limousine with calves at the age of up to 4 months was studied on a sown pasture in the region of the Central Balkan Mountains. The pasture is located at 386 m a.s.l. on an even terrain with prevailing sward of white Festuca arundinacea -about 70%, Poa pratensis - about 15%, Tnfolium repens - 10% and traces of weeds. Main meteorological data in the conditions of late autumn and behavioural reactions to grazing and rest for the cows and sucking, rest and grazing for the calves were recorded. It was found that the cows grazed from 3 to 7 hours a day during the three days of the experiment and the calves sucked and rested many times (5-6 times) during the day; often more than one calf sucked from one cow. The time of active grazing of the cows was considerably shorter than that recorded under climatic conditions, pasture composition and beef breeds differing from our experiment, on average 11.9 hours/day (Lathrop at al., 1988; Fuston et al., 1990).
