摘要

For centuries, lighthouses have helped mariners navigate safely through treacherous coastal waters. Because of their coastal locations, these structures have been required to withstand many harsh elements of nature. The environment of most lighthouses is quite severe, and this is certainly the case for the Hunting Island Lighthouse, located off the coast of South Carolina and within the Hunting Island State Park (Fig. 1). Hunting Island is a barrier island, only four miles long and one mile wide. The name of the island comes from its historical use as a hunting area by the inhabitants of the nearby city of Beaufort. Situated between the ports of Charleston and Savannah and marking the shoals of St. Helena Soound, the lighthouse helped assure the safe passage of ships through the shallow waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The original brick lighthouse was completed in 1859, but was later destroyed by Confederate troops during the American Civil War to prevent the Union Army from using it for navigation.
